James L. Hazard

Jim died peacefully surrounded by his caring family on Friday, July 22nd in Alamo. He is survived by his devoted wife, Gigi, of forty-nine years, loving son, Jeff, his wife Kirsten, loving daughter Kristin, her husband Chad, and their six special grandchildren: Jack, Bennett, and Hudson Hazard, and Connor, Tucker, and Karis Kiltz who reside in Alamo.

Jim, a third generation Californian, was born in Berkeley, CA. During his childhood his family resided in many different locations throughout the country. He received his education at Dartmouth College, A. B., in 1966 and returned to California to attend and graduate from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, Juris Doctorate in 1969. He joined a private law firm, and eventually became a partner of Sellar, Engleking, Hartman, and Hazard. He was a member of the American Bar Association and in addition, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. After his extensive litigation experience, he transitioned into his mediation practice toward the latter part of his career.

Jim was a highly accomplished person who, as a result of his ambition and dedication to others, had many varied achievements. He was a former Mayor of Walnut Creek and served two different terms — 1977-78 and 1981-82; he was also one of the key leaders involved in the "Open Space Bond Initiative" to preserve the environment of Walnut Creek during his term.

As a result of his deep faith and as a spiritual person, he was a leader of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in the "Lay Eucharistic Ministry" program. He was also a "49er faithful fan" going way back to the days in the Kezar Stadium. He was a member of the Bohemian Club and truly enjoyed the total "Grove" experience and the camaraderie with his "Puma" campmates. Jim was a member of Round Hill Country Club where, over the years he and his family enjoyed many an occasion: a little tennis, a little golf, and a little bit of fine and fun dining! (And of course, exercise at the gym). Jim especially loved the multiple vacations with his entire family at their mountain cabin near Mt. Lassen. It was indeed a family favorite enjoyed by all.

Jim touched many lives with his gentle, genuine, and positive outlook on life even until the end when he lost his courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. His legacy of loyalty, integrity, love, and faith was unending and will remain with us forever.
